This course will extensively deal with the issue of obesity in childhood and the value of good nutrition in the prevention of this growing health epidemic. It explores the determinants, causes, risk factors and implications of childhood obesity, along with its prevalence and known consequences. It will also tackle the role of proper nutrition in the management and prevention of this serious health problem, talking about the variety of dietary requirements of children and how to meet them, approaches for managing hunger, and appropriate food portion sizes. The course will also teach you how to exercise healthy food planning and preparation, promote active play, and reinforce healthy eating behaviours in children.
The course is designed to help you develop the knowledge and competencies that will let you: (a) understand the issue of obesity in children in-depth, including its determinants, causes, and medical implications; (b) know the behaviours that contribute to childhood obesity; (c) know the important role that proper nutrition plays in the prevention and management of obesity; (d) understand the dietary requirements of children and develop appropriate interventions for meeting them; (e) help children develop healthy behaviours and engage in active play; and (f) contribute in reversing the trend of childhood obesity.
